Ball dress code: what to wear to a Viennese ball
The rule of thumb for women: a floor-length evening gown. Cocktail and knee-length dresses are out of place at the big Hofburg, Rathaus and Opera balls.
- Length: the gown should reach the floor (or the ankle at the very least). The hem must not drag when you dance, so it is worth having the length adjusted to your shoes.
- Colour: any colour except white — white gowns are reserved for debutantes who open the ball. Deep red, emerald, navy, black and pastels are classic choices.
- Gloves: optional for guests. Long gloves look elegant with strapless or thin-strap gowns. For debutantes, long white gloves are mandatory.
- Jewellery and bag: one statement piece (necklace or earrings) and a small clutch — balls are crowded, and you will not want to carry a large bag.
- Shoes: you will dance and stand until the early morning. Choose a heel you can waltz in and break the shoes in beforehand.
- Tracht balls: at the Steirerball and the Jägerball, a dirndl or traditional costume is welcome; an evening gown is fine too.

What is a debutante and what does she wear?
Debutantes (Debütantinnen) are young women who open a Viennese ball together with their partners in a choreographed polonaise and waltz. They are selected by the ball’s young ladies’ and gentlemen’s committee and rehearse at a dance school for several weeks before the ball.
The debutante dress code is strict: a white, floor-length ball gown, long white gloves and usually a headpiece or tiara — at the Opera Ball the tiara is provided by the organisers. Each ball publishes its own rules on neckline, fabric and accessories, so check them before choosing a dress.
Tip: book your debutante dress 6–8 weeks before the ball. White gowns in popular sizes are the first to go in January.

Buy or rent? What a ball outfit costs
Most women wear a ball gown once or twice. That is why renting has become the usual choice in Vienna.
| Buying a new gown | Renting at Velvet Dress | |
|---|---|---|
| Gown | often several hundred euros; designer gowns well over €1,000 | €150–320 for 3 days, no rush |
| Jewellery, clutch, gloves | bought separately | included |
| Dry cleaning | paid separately after the ball | included |
| Alterations | paid separately | light alterations (hem, waist) at the fitting |
| After the ball | the gown stays in your wardrobe | you return it, no storage |
Rental prices as of October 2026. A refundable deposit of €200–300 applies. Full terms: pricing.
When should you book your ball gown?
- Debutantes: 6–8 weeks before the ball, so there is time for alterations.
- Guests at the major balls (Opera, Philharmonic, Hofburg balls): 2–4 weeks before.
- Last minute: possible if the gown is available — peak weeks are mid-January to mid-February.
